Coach Greg Glassman, the founder of CrossFit has promoted the method of combining intense, functional and varied exercises with the on line community for years. Elsewhere there have been many "near misses" with attempts to properly condition warriors, firefighters, cops and others who need functional fitness. None have come close to CrossFit.
As a Navy Hospital Corpsman (Active and Reserve) for over 21 years, I have had a first hand opportunity to see the range of conditioning for "operational fitness". Like most of my co-workers I was stuck with inadequate, segmented, moderate-intensity workouts and poorly planned weight lifting efforts.
I found CrossFit while working as a support Corpsman for the Naval Special Warfare Command.
The method developed by CrossFit's founders Greg and Lauren Glassman, is without peer. The functional, intense and varied workouts are applicable not only to law enforcement, fire and military professions, but also to the everyday challenges that nature sends our way in daily events.
Each of us has the need for a conditioning method that not only guards against injury but allows us to excel in anaerobic events (running, fighting, intense or sustained work) that are vital aspects of real life and demanding professions. That these linked anaerobic efforts (as functional movements) contribute to our aerobic fitness is what is lost on the general public. This is training for life.
The challenge has been made by the CrossFit community worldwide: If you can find a better method of conditioning for general physical preparedness, for real life, bring it. Until then, quit screwing around and get some CrossFit!
